Why Do Leaders Feel Lonely

Creating Disney Magic Ep 523 Why do leaders feel lonely “We don’t get better when we’re under stress, we get worse. We get quiet and we get isolated and nobody sees us. The success came when I changed the way I was dealing with my problems and became a more empathetic leader.”

Early in my career, I was known as “the Doberman.” I managed with an iron fist and thought fear was the way to get things done. Meanwhile I was feeling isolated, stressed out, and disconnected. I was raising my voice, intimidating staff, and constantly feeling the weight of leadership alone. It was like being lost. I was being buried by insecurity.

After a while I had a realization that changed the way I lead. Success isn’t about ruling with an iron fist. Success happens when you are leading with empathy and openness. Instead of letting things pile up and weigh me down I started focusing on building relationships, understanding my team’s needs, and addressing problems head-on.

I began seeing my team as partners, not subordinates. Coffee chats, open conversations, and genuine care transformed our dynamic. As I opened up, they responded with loyalty and dedication. This shift brought a remarkable positive change to our work environment. It wasn’t instant, but gradually I became a leader who empowered instead of intimidated. It was positive for our team and made a positive difference on my experience as a leader.

If you’re feeling isolated, overwhelmed, or lonely in your leadership role, it’s time to make a shift. Start by addressing issues immediately, seek support, and never hesitate to talk about what you’re going through. Remember, you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

When you can be your best self you’ll create a workplace where everyone, including yourself, can thrive.
