“Find a mentor that will be honest with you. That’s how you’re going to learn the most.”
If you’re looking for a mentor or some solid advice, take the leap and ask. When I joined Marriott and later Disney, I didn’t have mentors handed to me on a silver platter. I reached out. Asked questions. Sought advice.
Do you know what I heard back?
Not now.
Too busy.
Maybe later..
Not interested.
Work harder.
It feels frustrating getting halfhearted or no responses. That didn’t stop me from continuing to reach out though. Eventually I found a couple of amazing mentors who saw potential in me and decided to invest their time. Their candid feedback, even when tough to hear, shaped my career.
In 40 years of a rewarding career, I can point to just TWO mentors who made a significant impact. Quality over quantity is where the magic is. Whether you’re asking for advice, trying to connect with an inspiring figure, or just navigating your career, don’t stop. Work hard, take the feedback, and apply it diligently.
Keep pushing through. Your mentor, or your breakthrough, is just around the corner.
We’ve got a webinar coming up on October 9th about service recovery – it’s a great place to start. Find your path to creating magic in your career and life. Keep at it.
