“You gain a lot more business by improving the experience, the quality of your teams, and the training.”
When I was with Disney, people often assumed our competition was Universal, SeaWorld, or even destinations like Las Vegas. The reality is that our real competitors were the things within our control. Instead of worrying about other organizations, we knew we needed to be aware of things such as poor leadership, inadequate training, and unsatisfactory guest experiences.
On a daily basis, I focused on three things, and none of them had to do with what Universal was doing. Our team was busy ensuring we hired the right leaders, trained our cast members impeccably, and upheld the highest standards in cleanliness and customer service. Every detail mattered. Every smile counted. Every clean restroom made a difference.
What we did changed the game. By addressing our internal “competitors,” we created unforgettable experiences that our guests cherished and they kept coming back. Your competition isn’t across town. It is in elements like poor service and cleanliness. Be smart and tackle those head-on.
If you’re finding it tough to level up your business, start by looking at what you control. Enhance your team’s skills, improve your processes, and elevate the experience you offer. Remember, excellence is within your control when you focus on what truly matters. Go out and create that magic.
